Proceedings of the New York Pathological Society : For the Year 1891 (Classic Reprint)

Description

Excerpt from Proceedings of the New York Pathological Society: For the Year 1891 Dr. L. Emmet Holt presented specimens from such a case, accompanied by the following history: The child was twenty-five months of age, and had been under observation at the Babies' Hospital for the last three months of its life. It had previously lived in a malarial district, but without any distinct malarial attacks. It was admitted for a severe ulcerative stomatitis and anaemia. It had had several attacks of bronchitis, and one attack of broncho-pneumonia in infancy. On admission the child's general condition was poor; the spleen was enlarged, being at that time one and a half inch below the border of the ribs; the liver one and a half inch below the free border of the ribs, and its border normal by percussion. There was no fluid in the abdominal cavity, but the abdomen was large. There was no enlargement of the superficial lymphatic glands. The child improved steadily under treatment for six weeks, and at the end of this time the mouth was almost well, she had gained in weight, and the anaemia was less marked. Greenville

Description

Located on the rolling Blackland Prairies of Northeast Texas, Greenville was founded in January 1847 as the county seat of Hunt County. Through the years, it became not only the seat of local and county government, but the economic, social, and cultural center of much of the area. With the arrival of the railroads in 1880, Greenville became a market center for cotton, livestock, and other agricultural products, and a vast assortment of goods were available to discerning shoppers. Paved roads, a professional theater, baseball, football, and the North Texas Fair brought visitors to Greenville from the surrounding areas. Merchants, bankers, and entrepreneurs worked diligently to create a community of modern conveniences, beautiful homes, churches, and schools. One of the first municipally owned power plants opened in Greenville in the late 19th century. Though they do keep up with the times, Greenville residents continue to honor their town s remarkable history."

Wilde Lake

Description

"Wilde Lake is a knockout." (Stephen King). "Intriguing premise, stunning reveal, irresistible read." (Val McDermid). "Wilde Lake is a standout novel: an intelligent, emotional, satisfying mystery that explores huge themes in small-town microcosm, in the manner of To Kill A Mockingbird, the inspiration on which it reflects." (Alex Marwood). "Wilde Lake is engrossing, suspenseful and substantial." (Scott Turow Luisa). Lu' Brant is the newly elected - and first female - state's attorney of Howard County, Maryland, a job in which her revered father famously served. Fiercely intelligent and ambitious, she sees an opportunity to make her name by trying a mentally disturbed drifter accused of beating a woman to death in her home. As Lu prepares for the trial, the case dredges up painful memories, reminding her small but tight-knit family of the night when her brother, AJ, saved his best friend at the cost of another man's life. Only eighteen, AJ was cleared by a grand jury. Now, Lu wonders if the events of 1980 happened as she remembers them. What details might have been withheld from her when she was a child? The more she learns about the case, the more questions arise. Propelled into the past, she discovers that the legal system, the bedrock of her entire life, does not have all the answers and that the truth might be a dangerous thing to learn.

How to work with others Twenty thousand years ago our planet was an icehouse. Temperatures were down six degrees; ice sheets kilometres thick buried much of Europe and North America and sea levels were 130m lower. The following 15 millennia saw an astonishing transformation as The Cambridge Companion to Modern Japanese Culture free epub our planet metamorphosed into the temperate world upon which our civilisation has grown and thrived. One of the most dynamic periods in Earth history saw rocketing temperatures melt the great ice sheets like butter on a hot summer's day; feeding torrents of freshwater into ocean basins that rapidly filled to present levels. The removal of the enormous weight of ice at high latitudes caused the crust to bounce back triggering earthquakes in Europe and North America and provoking an unprecedented volcanic outburst in Iceland. A giant submarine landslide off the coast of Norway sent a tsunami crashing onto the Scottish coast while around the margins of the continents the massive load exerted on the crust by soaring sea levels encouraged a widespread seismic and volcanic rejoinder. In many ways, this post-glacial world mirrors that projected to arise as a consequence of unmitigated climate change driven by human activities.

Frequency: Tune in. Hear God. download PDF

Robert Morris: Frequency: Tune in. Hear God.

Frequency: Tune in. Hear God.

Description

Hearing God is not something you do. Hearing God is someone you are. As believers in Jesus Christ, we naturally want to know how we can hear God's voice. Does God speak? Is He speaking to me? The good news is, yes, He is speaking. And like a radio host broadcasting His voice into the airwaves, God speaks all the time. The question is, are we tuned into the right frequency? In Frequency, Robert Morris reveals a groundbreaking, Bible-based teaching about hearing God's voice. God communicates with us in multiple ways, whether through the Bible, through circumstances, or even through a whisper. Robert Morris demonstrates how we can mature from hearing His voice as sheep to hearing it as His friend to even hearing it as a prophet. When we begin to understand the general and specific ways God speaks to us, then we can begin to cultivate a life of deeper connection with our Creator. In Frequency, readers will...* Gain a better understanding of how to recognize God's voice * Value the voice of the Lord * Discern the general voice of God from the specific voice of God * Grow in their relationship with the Lord by developing consistent time with His Word * Enjoy drawing closer to their Creator Frequency will demystify the process of hearing God and take you to a new level in your faith. God is speaking. Are you listening?

Huguenot Garden is a children's story of the daily and adventurous episodes in the lives of Rene and Albret Martineau, young twin sisters in a seventeeth-century, French Protestant family. The episodes follow the twins and the rest of the Martineau family as they work, worship, commune, and suffer persecution together. The story aims to portray the ideas and historical details common to Huguenot life in La Rochelle, France, 1685, a tragic year whose final quarter brought the full wrath of Louis XIV. The wind blew, and blew and "blew" ! It blew so hard, it took everything with it: Mr. White's umbrella, Priscilla's balloon, the twins' scarves, even the wig on the judge' s head. But just when the wind was about to carry everything out to sea, it changed its mind! Frequency: Tune in. Hear God. free ebook How did a "smokejumper" see that setting another fire would save his life, while those who ignored his insight perished? How did Martin Chalfie come up with a million-dollar idea (and a Nobel Prize) for a natural flashlight that enabled researchers to look inside living organisms to watch biological processes in action? Klein also dissects impediments to insight, such as when organizations claim to value employee creativity and to encourage breakthroughs but in reality block disruptive ideas and prioritize avoidance of mistakes. Or when information technology systems are "dumb by design" and block potential discoveries. Both scientifically sophisticated and fun to read, Seeing What Others Don't shows that insight is not just a "eureka!" moment but a whole new way of understanding.

Agatha Raisin and the Blood of an Englishman

Description

Even though Agatha Raisin loathes Christmas panto, her friend Mrs Bloxby, the vicar's wife, has persuaded her to support the local am dram society in their festive offering. Stifling a yawn at the production of Babes in the Wood, Agatha watches the baker playing an ogre strut and threaten on stage until a trapdoor opens...followed by a scream and silence! Surely this wasn't the way the scene was rehearsed? When it turns out the local baker had been murdered most horribly, Agatha puts her team of detectives on the case. And they soon discover more feuds and temperamental behaviour in amateur dramatics than in a professional stage show - and face more and more danger as Agatha and her team get too close to the killer...

This is the first dictionary of symbols to be based on literature, rather than 'universal' psychological archetypes or myths. It explains and illustrates the literary symbols that we all frequently encounter (such as swan, rose, moon, gold), and Agatha Raisin and the Blood of an Englishman download ebook pdf gives hundreds of cross-references and quotations. The dictionary concentrates on English literature, but its entries range widely from the Bible and classical authors to the twentieth century, taking in American and European literatures. For this new edition, Michael Ferber has included over twenty completely new entries (including bear, holly, sunflower and tower), and has added to many of the existing entries. Enlarged and enriched from the first edition, its informed style and rich references make this book an essential tool not only for literary and classical scholars, but for all students of literature.

Maggie Black: No-nonsense Guide to International Development

No-nonsense Guide to International Development

Description

'Overseas aid' and 'international development' are catch-all terms that cover a multitude of activities - and abuses. Building dams in India, planting trees in Burkina Faso and rescuing street children in Brazil are images of development with which we can all identify. But what few people realize is that the terms aid and development often mask confusion, contradiction, and even downright deceit. This guide explains what 'development' actually is - and explores its political and economic roots in history. It shows what can happen in the name of development and argues for a more organic, social approach with those it seeks to serve as equal partners in the process.

- Life at sea and in the Mongol Empire Daddy, would you like a sandwich, with all your favourite things...? Join one little girl on her quest to make her father the perfect sandwich, whether he likes it or not...You're in for a wicked surprise! From Squishy McFluff author Pip Jones and bright new talent Laura Hughes, this is a brilliantly funny and charming picture book perfect for ages 3+ and for Fathers' Day gifts. First in a brand new action-packed military science fiction series, meet Major Ariane Kedros--daring pilot, decorated soldier, war criminal. It is based on Meyer's thorough understanding of software engineering, and his extensive personal experience of programming and project management. He highlights the limitations of agile methods as well as their truly brilliant contributions - even those to which their own authors do not do full justice. Three important chapters precede the core discussion of agile ideas: an overview, serving as a concentrate of the entire book; a dissection of the intellectual devices used by agile authors; and a review of classical software engineering techniques, such No-nonsense Guide to International Development download ebook as requirements analysis and lifecycle models, which agile methods criticize. The final chapters describe the precautions that a company should take during a transition to agile development and present an overall assessment of agile ideas. This is the first book to discuss agile methods, beyond the brouhaha, in the general context of modern software engineering. It is a key resource for projects that want to combine the best of established results and agile innovations.

Deirdre Heddon: Autobiography and Performance: Performing Selves

Autobiography and Performance: Performing Selves

Description

"Autobiography and Performance" offers a comprehensive overview of the use of autobiography in performance. Encompassing work from the solo monologue to site-specific practice, this book seeks to uncover the political potentials and limits that accompany the use of the personal in performance. Examining the work of key international practitioners, including Tim Miller, Lisa Kron, Bobby Baker and Curious, Heddon argues that autobiographical performances, which turn to the past as a means to rewrite the future, continue to act as possible sites of resistance and intervention.

and manoeuvres, helping us understand the underlying logic. It is known that in the summer of 1768, Captain James Cook sailed from England on H.M.S "Endeavour, " beginning a three-year voyage around the world on a secret mission to discover an unknown continent at the bottom of the globe. What is less known is that a boy by the name of Nicholas Young was a stowaway on that ship. A debut novel based on the extraordinary life of Jeannette Walls' maternal grandmother - a sassy, straight-talking heroine for whom saving lives, taming wild horses and beating ranch hands at poker are all in a day's work. Born in 1901 in the rolling Autobiography and Performance: Performing Selves free download pdf grassland of West Texas, at the age of 15, with very little formal education, Lily Casey Smith left home to begin teaching in a frontier town, riding 500 miles on her beloved pony, Patch, all alone, to get to her job. She went on, with her husband, to run an 180,000 acre ranch in Arizona and to raise two children, one of whom is Jeannette's memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls. Readers will love and marvel at this intrepid woman, for her fearlessness, her courage, her wicked sense of humour. A true adventurer!
